High Fidelity is one of my all-time favorite movies. John Cusack plays a character (Rob) that owns a record shop and spends his days making mix-tapes, Top-5 lists, and working through his identity crisis. There is this great scene where one of his friends/co-workers (played by Jack Black) bursts into the store on a Monday morning with his "special Monday Morning Mix Tape" to cheer everyone up. Of course, Rob hates the idea - he'd rather keep on being his miserable, sad-bastard self.

So, in honor of
ditching my own bastard-self this Lent I've put together my own Monday Morning Mix. These are the songs I've been obsessed with recently. They give some words (and a nice beat) to where I find myself these days. And we all know I love spending my days making mix-tapes, Top-5 lists, and working through my most recent existential crisis.

I had crazy dream last night. I was with a group of people who were singing, but since I have a
terrible singing voice I wasn't participating. Instead, I was sitting there feeling ashamed and alone. Then, Adam Lambert came up to me (I know, so weird) and said, "You have a beautiful voice. You need to sing." I woke up this morning cracking up that I had a dream about Adam Lambert! But, the more I thought about it the more I realized that those words were just what I needed to hear. Was Adam Lambert the voice of God speaking to my heart? Who knows. But I do know that today I put in my Monday Morning Mix and I sang a little louder.

Sing when I'm broken,
and I'll sing when I'm free.
Sing for the world,
and then sing just for me.
~Lucy Schwartz - Life in Letters

Enjoy the mix. (To listen I think you need to open up my blog directly - it doesn't look like the music player is showing in Google Reader...)

I tell you what the world needs: more of your voice - singing, talking, whatever. The world needs it.

Ya know, of course the voice of God would be from a gay American Idol winner. He likes to work that way... completely unexpected.

Hooli, I finally am getting a chance to read these posts and you are inspiring me to write again. I miss it so much and have started to feel suffocated by this little space in the internet I carved out for myself.
